Battery Storage and Inverter capacity

I have a 3.6 kW Sunsynk inverter with a 4.8kW battery. I have a previous installation of solar arrays that are rated for up to 4 kWh when domestic generation in UK was limited to that level.

Questions;

  1. Can I add another similar 4.8kW battery to double the storage capacity without having to change the 3.6 kW invertor?

  2. Is it the invertor rating / capacity that limits how many more PV arrays i can upgrade?

  3. DEpendiung on answer to above - can i add more PV panels and extra battery with my existing invertor?

Thanks, Mav

You are confusing units, kW is power while kWh is capacity.

Batteries are rated in kWh or Ah for capacity typically, and Amps for maximum charge/discharge current (very rarely in kW).

Solar panels are rated in Watts or kW (depending on size).

  1. battery needs to be compatible with existing one (compatible BMS)

  2. You can add more solar panels, inverter will clip maximum power (but you will get more power when there isn't much sun), but you are limited by maximum voltage that inverter will accept (3.6kW inverter has 500V limit, so for typical panels, you can get around 2x10 panels, around 10kW)

  3. Maybe, see above.
