How a Shropshire Homeowner Cut Energy Costs by Around 58% — Sunsynk news article

With two electric vehicles, a heat pump and the usual demands of a busy household, Shropshire homeowner Adam uses a considerable amount of electricity. Yet despite this, he's managed to reduce his energy costs by approximately 58%, with his monthly bills averaging just £42. The results are thanks to a combination of solar panels, Sunsynk battery storage and a smart electricity tariff, which Adam has configured to make the most of cheaper overnight electricity. During six months of last year, he even managed to eliminate his net energy bill entirely, paying considerably less during the remaining months.

We spoke to Adam about why he chose Sunsynk, how he's adapted his system as his energy requirements have changed and what he's learned about getting the most from solar and battery storage.

The Challenge: Powering an Increasingly Electric Home

Adam's household has undergone a significant change in how it uses energy. With two EVs covering approximately 22,000 miles annually, and a Daikin heat pump now providing heating, electricity has become central to almost every aspect of daily life.

Having moved away from mains gas, Adam needed a system that could manage this growing demand while keeping running costs under control. His aim wasn't simply to generate electricity through solar panels, but to make better use of the energy available to him, particularly during periods when grid electricity was more expensive.

With a background teaching in the electrical industry, Adam was already familiar with solar technology and had previously used other equipment at his former property. He first became aware of Sunsynk through eFIXX, the electrical industry platform, and recommendations from friends encouraged him to explore the products further.

The flexibility of the Sunsynk hybrid inverter appealed to him, particularly its ability to manage solar generation and battery storage alongside features such as backup power, smart load management and solar hot water, depending on the system configuration.

The Solution: Solar, Battery Storage, and Smart Energy Management

Adam's installation consists of a 6.37kWp solar array featuring 14 AIKO Energy panels, a 7kW Sunsynk ECCO hybrid inverter and 21.28kWh of Sunsynk W Series battery storage. The solar panels generate electricity during daylight hours, which can be used directly by the household or stored in the batteries for later.

However, an important part of Adam's approach is that he doesn't rely on solar generation alone. He's on the Octopus Intelligent Go EV Saver tariff, which provides access to cheaper electricity during designated overnight periods. Adam has configured his Sunsynk system to charge the batteries automatically between approximately 11:30pm and 5am, allowing him to store lower-cost grid electricity for use during more expensive periods of the day.

Through a mobile app, he can monitor and adjust his charging schedule as needed. Octopus also provides additional smart charging slots for his electric vehicles, creating further opportunities to access cheaper electricity. When these become available, Adam can choose whether to adjust his home battery charging schedule to take advantage of them, subject to the applicable tariff conditions.

This combination of solar generation and scheduled battery charging has been particularly useful during winter, when shorter days limit solar production and electricity demand increases due to heating.

Expanding the System as Needs Change

Adam didn't install his full battery capacity from the outset. His original system included two Sunsynk batteries, but when he later added the Daikin heat pump, the additional electricity demand prompted him to expand his storage to five batteries. Rather than replacing the existing equipment, he was able to increase the system's storage capacity to better accommodate his household's changing requirements.

The Results:

The financial results have been significant. Adam reports reducing his energy costs by approximately 58%, with his net grid electricity costs for 2025 totalling £505.23.

Over the course of the year, the household imported 11,147.86kWh of electricity at a cost of £1,129.89. However, exporting 4,164kWh of surplus electricity back to the grid generated £624.66 in income, bringing his net annual grid electricity cost down considerably.

Would Adam Recommend Sunsynk?

Having seen the impact on his electricity bills, Adam is enthusiastic about the decision to invest in his Sunsynk system. When asked what advice he'd give to someone considering a similar installation, his response was straightforward:

I wouldn't hesitate. Go for it sooner rather than later. The savings are there from day one. For six months last year I had no energy bill, and for the other six months I had a reduced energy bill. It can be done.

While every home has different energy requirements, Adam's experience is a useful example of how solar and battery storage can work alongside a smart electricity tariff to help manage the costs of an increasingly electric household.
