A hybrid solar inverter converts electricity generated by solar panels into usable power for your home while managing a connected battery. It can direct solar energy to your appliances, store surplus energy for later and, where configured, charge the battery from the grid or export excess electricity. By bringing solar generation and battery management together, a hybrid inverter helps you use more of your own energy and reduce reliance on the grid. With compatible battery storage and a suitable backup installation, it can also supply essential circuits during a power cut.

For most UK homes, a 3.6kW to 5kW single-phase inverter is sufficient. As a general rule, choose an inverter rated at 80-100% of your intended solar array size. A 4kW roof array suits a 5kW inverter; a 6kW array suits an 8kW inverter. Three-phase inverters are for homes or businesses with a three-phase supply. Always have an MCS-accredited installer size the system for your specific consumption profile.

Sunsynk inverters are optimised for use with Sunsynk LiFePO4 batteries and are guaranteed compatible across the entire Sunsynk battery range. Many models also support third-party batteries via CAN bus or RS485 - check the specific inverter datasheet for confirmed compatibility. For warranty and performance guarantees, Sunsynk-to-Sunsynk pairings are always recommended.

Suitable Sunsynk inverter models can be used in installations that meet UK grid connection and MCS requirements. Your installer should confirm the selected model’s certification and follow the appropriate DNO application or notification process. G98 generally covers qualifying installations up to 16A per phase, while G99 applies to larger installations and those outside G98 requirements. Any required DNO approval must be obtained before connection. Eligibility for Smart Export Guarantee payments depends on the complete installation meeting the relevant certification, metering and export supplier requirements, rather than the inverter alone.

In many cases, yes. A Sunsynk hybrid inverter can be added alongside an existing string inverter using AC coupling, or the existing inverter can be replaced entirely. DC coupling is generally more efficient and preferred for new installs. An MCS installer will assess your existing array voltage, string configuration and switchgear before recommending the right approach.
