Tucked away in the Lincolnshire countryside, Station Farm is a working grain facility that recently invested in a commercial solar installation to keep operations efficient during one of the most energy-intensive times of the year: the harvest.

The site is used primarily for grain storage and drying, a process that depends on steady, high electricity usage. With energy costs on the rise, the farm’s owners saw a need to cut overheads, reduce grid reliance, and gain more control over energy use. The solution? A rooftop solar and battery system built for commercial resilience.

The set up

The installation was carried out by Hallgate Lincs Ltd, a trusted electrical contractor with a growing reputation in renewables. They delivered a 65kW solar PV system with Sunsynk 50kW three-phase hybrid inverter, neatly split across the farm’s east and west facing rooftops.

Why the 50kW was chosen for this commercial solar installation:

  • Remote monitoring: With the Sunsynk Connect app, the farm can track system performance in real-time.

  • Flexible operating modes: Supports on-grid, off-grid, and uninterruptible power supply (UPS) configurations.

  • High-voltage battery compatibility: Fully compatible with the 64kWh high-voltage Sunsynk battery rack installed on-site.

  • Retrofit ready: DC and AC coupled design allows future expansion or integration with any existing or legacy PV systems.

For Station Farm, this means solar power during the day, stored energy at night, and better control of consumption when costs are highest. The inverter is built for industrial use but designed for simple installation and maintenance.

Why solar made sense

For Station Farm, the decision to go solar was driven by the need to reduce energy bills and make better use of what’s already available. Rather than installing ground-mounted solar that would cut into usable land, the team looked to their existing infrastructure. The rooftops of the grain stores provided a large, unshaded surface with east to west exposure, providing the perfect opportunity to install solar without disrupting daily operations or sacrificing farmland.

While it’s still early days for hard performance data, the system has already started to show a positive impact via real-time monitoring. Grid usage has dropped, and the site now has far more control over how and when it draws energy. Just as importantly, the system was completed on time and fully operational ahead of harvest season - despite challenging weather conditions that included high winds and intense summer heat.

About the installer

Hallgate Lincs Ltd are based in Skegness, UK, and have more than 25 years experience in the electrical industry. Originally specialists in installations and maintenance across the leisure sector, including holiday parks and commercial electrical systems, rising energy costs and growing demand pushed Hallgate into renewables. Since then, solar has become a major part of their business, and an area they’ve mastered.

We’ve installed over 30 Sunsynk systems now, and we’ll continue to use them for domestic and small commercial jobs." - Hallgate representative.

Setting a great example

The Station Farm project is a clear example of how renewable energy can support agricultural operations in a way that’s both practical and future-proof. With careful system design, robust hardware, and an experienced installation partner, even power-hungry commercial sites can significantly reduce their dependence on the grid. From maximising unused roof space to powering essential systems day and night, the project sets a strong precedent for how UK farms can adapt and thrive in a changing energy landscape.

If you’re running a business that can’t afford downtime, the combination of Sunsynk hybrid technology and experienced installers offers a clear path forward, and Station Farm is already reaping the benefits.
