Powering a Scout community with smart off-grid solar technology.

In the coastal town of Bexhill-on-Sea, a community of over 1,500 Scouts has gained access to reliable power. The Senlac District Scouts site, home to 10 local groups, has recently gone fully off grid thanks to a smart solar and battery installation powered by Sunsynk technology. For decades the site has hosted outdoor events, camps, and overnight stays without connection to the national grid. Lighting was limited, and facilities were basic, until local installer Taylor Richardson Electrical Ltd stepped in with a renewable solution designed to deliver consistent, self-sufficient energy all year round.
The Setup
The installation features 12 x 440W solar panels combined with a Sunsynk 5.5kW hybrid inverter, and 10kWh of battery storage using two Sunsynk W5.3 5.32kWh batteries. This compact yet powerful system now provides lighting, power outlets, and refrigeration for the main Scout hut, all without a grid connection.
To ensure peak performance, the installation team also fitted Tigo optimisers, helping the system overcome shading challenges from nearby trees and buildings. This allows the panels to perform efficiently even when sunlight is partially obstructed.

Why Sunsynk?
Taylor Richardson Electrical have been using Sunsynk products for several years and knew they were the right choice for the job.
“It’s a great product that covers every angle...They’re easy to use, quick to set up, and the support from Sunsynk is second to none. Being able to get things resolved remotely when needed makes all the difference.” - Taylor Richardson Electrical Ltd
The Sunsynk 5.5kW inverter was chosen for its reliability and flexibility in off-grid applications, a key factor when there isn’t a backup power source. Combined with Sunsynk’s robust lithium batteries the system can run the building for weeks at a time, without interruptions. Keeping the design simple and self-sufficient was also crucial. Every component was selected to deliver efficiency with minimal maintenance required. The system was carefully balanced to ensure optimal solar input and battery charging, avoiding wasted energy.

Powering the Community
The impact of this installation has been immediate and widespread. The new system now powers lighting, cooking equipment, and essential devices, meaning young people can experience longer and safter events. With electricity available the building can now store food, host evening activities, and even serve as an emergency backup space during bad weather.
