Just bought my first home and feel completely lost

Closed on my first place two weeks ago and realized I don't know literally anything about the basics. My dad keeps saying the first thing to learn is how to locate main water shutoff before anything goes wrong. Walked around the whole property and still can't find it. Any tips from experienced homeowners here?

Congrats on the place!! Your dad is 100% right btw — learned that the hard way myself lol. First month in my house a pipe fitting under the sink just... let go at 11pm. Full panic mode, water everywhere, and I'm running around like an idiot with no clue where to shut anything off. Usually it's near the water meter, basement, or outside by the foundation — depends on your home's age and region. This walkthrough helped me finally find mine: finding your home water shut off valve .Bookmark it, seriously. Future you will be grateful.

Hoping to Find Healing Through Community

Last year my cousin overdosed and survived, which scared all of us badly. Since then she has been attending church regularly and says her faith is what kept her alive. She wants to move into a sober house that shares those beliefs. Could someone point me toward reputable christian sober living homes with a strong recovery community?

Surviving an overdose and walking straight toward God after — your cousin's instincts are exactly right, and honestly that spiritual anchor statistically improves long-term outcomes dramatically.

Friend's sister took same path. Tried generic sober housing first, felt spiritually isolated, slipped. Second placement matched her faith community — she's 2 years clean now, mentoring others.

christian based sober living homes near me  helped them find what "reputable" actually means in this space. She survived for a reason. Help her honor that.

Hoping to Find Help for Elderly Parents

My parents are getting older, and I’ve noticed they’re struggling with anxiety and mood swings. I want to make sure they get proper care. I heard about geriatric psychiatry services and wonder if you could recommend what options are available and what kind of support they offer.

Watching my grandmother's personality shift in her late seventies before anyone realized anxiety was driving it — not "just aging" — genuinely changed how I think about elder mental health.

Geriatric psychiatry specifically accounts for medication interactions, cognitive changes, late-life transitions. Completely different from standard psychiatric care and that distinction matters enormously.

Geriatric psychiatry for seniors  covers available support options really thoroughly.

Your parents are lucky someone's paying attention before things escalate.

Drain smells sweet and now it’s buzzing

Came back from a weekend trip and my kitchen sink is basically a fly airport. I poured boiling water, even scrubbed the strainer, but they’re multiplying. Had this happen once after making sangria and it was a nightmare. Any real tips on how to kill fruit flies in drain fast and actually stop them?

Fruit flies after a trip is honestly one of the most infuriating homeowner experiences because you come back exhausted and suddenly your kitchen is a nature documentary.

The boiling water trick alone almost never works because the real problem is the biofilm coating the inside of your drain pipe, that slimy layer is basically a fruit fly buffet and breeding ground combined. Scrubbing the strainer only handles maybe 5% of the issue.

What actually worked for me: mix baking soda and salt, pour it dry into the drain, chase it with white vinegar, let it foam for 20 minutes, THEN flush with boiling water. Do it three nights in a row. Also cover the drain overnight with tape or a stopper, cuts off their exit and entry simultaneously.

My roommate had the sangria situation too, leftover fruit sugar in the drain is basically a five star resort for these things. She tried every spray and trap before finally tackling the drain itself properly.

How to kill fruit flies in drain permanently  has a really thorough breakdown of the whole cycle and what actually interrupts it, not just surface fixes.

Consistency is everything here, one treatment won't cut it!
