Drain smells sweet and now it’s buzzing

Came back from a weekend trip and my kitchen sink is basically a fly airport. I poured boiling water, even scrubbed the strainer, but they’re multiplying. Had this happen once after making sangria and it was a nightmare. Any real tips on how to kill fruit flies in drain fast and actually stop them?

Fruit flies after a trip is honestly one of the most infuriating homeowner experiences because you come back exhausted and suddenly your kitchen is a nature documentary.

The boiling water trick alone almost never works because the real problem is the biofilm coating the inside of your drain pipe, that slimy layer is basically a fruit fly buffet and breeding ground combined. Scrubbing the strainer only handles maybe 5% of the issue.

What actually worked for me: mix baking soda and salt, pour it dry into the drain, chase it with white vinegar, let it foam for 20 minutes, THEN flush with boiling water. Do it three nights in a row. Also cover the drain overnight with tape or a stopper, cuts off their exit and entry simultaneously.

My roommate had the sangria situation too, leftover fruit sugar in the drain is basically a five star resort for these things. She tried every spray and trap before finally tackling the drain itself properly.

How to kill fruit flies in drain permanently  has a really thorough breakdown of the whole cycle and what actually interrupts it, not just surface fixes.

Consistency is everything here, one treatment won't cut it!
