Off-peak supply as generator

I have a property with two power supplies: a 24-hour supply and an off-peak supply. I want to connect my 100A off-peak supply to my 8k Sunsynk inverter, to be used whenever it becomes live. Currently, it's connected to the GEN input and behaves as follows:

  • When both supplies are on: 3kW from the 24-hour grid, 600W from solar, and 0W from the off-peak supply.

  • When only the off-peak supply is on: 0kW from the 24-hour grid, 600W from solar, and 3kW from the off-peak supply.

So the 24-supply has to be cut before the inverter uses the off-peak supply. Can the inverter switch to the GEN input when it's live to charge the battery and power essential loads? It can't power non-essential (grid) loads to avoid connecting both supplies.

Or is this functionality better achieved by setting the GEN input for a micro inverter?

Which country are you in?

Are you sure you have two supplies? two meters, two main fuses, two bills?

In the UK for example it was common to have a big time switch or radio controlled switch to connected to the single supply. This circuit would only go live for typically seven hours in the night. Heat storage heaters would heat to a high temp and discharge the heat during the day - ending up cold in the evening just when you wanted the heat but that's another story!

Now the point is that there was only one supply but the price charged for electricity used on either circuit was lower during the night.

If this is your set up you can connect the inverter to your main fuse board / consumer unit and use the TIMER function to only charge during the cheaper rate. Many of us in the UK are doing just this. No solar, in my case, just a battery
