Prevent EV Charger from draining the battery

Hi all,

Just had a Sunsynk 3.5 hybrid ECO inverter installed along with batteries and panels, I asked my installer to ensure that when I charge the car I don't drain the batteries, he looked puzzled and said I will need to investigate further.......

I am thinking I cannot be the only person with this requirement and wondered how others have managed to ensure the EV charger only pulls from the Grid and doesn't drain the batteries.

Thanks

Carl.

I don't know if this will help, but here goes...

I have Octopus Intelligent Go. This gives me a cheap car charging rate of 7.5p between 23:30 and 05:30.

My export rate is Outgoing Octopus Fixed Light at 8p.

I have a Nero EV which is now compatible with my Zappi2 and Octopus.

I plug in my charger and Octopus takes care of the car charging at night (cheap rate) according to the grid requirements. I also charge my Sunsync batteries up to the required amount at the same time. (80% at the moment.)

During the day the Zappi is set to charge only when there is surplus electricity being exported.

This seems to cover all angles.

So, I export at 8p during the day and import at 7.5p overnight. The car only charges up to the 80% I set on it regardless of the Octopus or Zappi settings. I can swap the charging round if necessary, but it all works so well this way - I just plug in and let it get on with it.

Before Octopus had the Niro EV setup to work with the Zappi, I used to set the schedule on the MiEnergy app to overnight charging, and make sure that the Zappi was set to only charge when exporting to the grid. The batteries don't drop below 97% that way during the day.

I know this won't neccesarily work with other chargers or cars, but it may be helpful to someone...
