Generator set up

I want to connect a generator to the inverter, I want to start the generator manually and only if there is a power failure and the batteries die at night. What is the best way, on the grid side or the gen port. If i go grid side I would need to use a change over switch to prevent back feed to the grid. But if I use the gen port do I need a change over switch or just wire directly from the generator to the gen port.

Connected Directly.

Also I have my batteries set to only discharge to 55% in winter so if there is a power cut I still have significant power in reserve, and then if necessary it tops up from the grid next day ( all set from the timer menu) The generator is only if extreme circumstances (prolonged power cut) and we have used what’s in the batteries and it’s a very dull day following, I’ll charge from generator.
