The challenge
The property runs two EVs covering around 22,000 miles a year and a Daikin heat pump, on top of typical household use. Adam wanted a system that could handle that significant electrical demand, reduce reliance on expensive peak-rate electricity and adapt as his energy needs changed.
The solution
The setup centres on a 7kW Sunsynk ECCO hybrid inverter and 21.28kWh of Sunsynk W Series battery storage, paired with a 6.37kWp, 14-panel AIKO Energy solar array. Sunsynk's flexibility across battery storage, backup, smart loads and solar hot water was a key reason for the choice, and battery capacity was expanded after the heat pump was installed. Much of the saving comes from switching from Octopus Go to Octopus Intelligent Go EV Saver. The batteries charge overnight during the cheaper off-peak period, typically between 11:30pm and 5am. When Octopus offers additional EV charging slots, Adam uses a mobile app to decide whether to top up the home battery during those windows or leave it as it is.

Adam reports bills averaging around £42 a month as of March 2026. For six months of 2025, he had no net energy bill, with reduced bills in the remaining months.

In January 2025, while still connected to gas, electricity cost £216.95 and gas cost £98.64. After the heat pump installation and full disconnection from gas, January 2026's electricity bill was £129.64 after a £3.04 export credit, even though electricity use rose by around 12%, from 1,396.41kWh to 1,564.94kWh.
